Valley Haven is honoured to be one of the recipients of the proceeds from the Alpha Club Fashion Show. Valley Haven's executive director Kathy Concepcion attended an Alpha Club luncheon to receive the donation. Thank you to the ladies of the Alpha Club for their continued support. Your organization has done so much for the Lompoc community over the years and continues to support local organizations.

Valley Haven Receives Support from Grants and Donations
Valley Haven is a 501(c) 3 non-profit corporation. To keep our program affordable for our participants and their families we have not increased our daily rate in over five years. Participant fees alone are not enough to sustain our program. We receive much needed support from our fundraisers, donations and grants. Valley Haven thanks those individuals who make donations. We appreciate that you recognise the valuable service we provide to our community. We also want to thank the foundations who grant us funds to continue our program. Some of the foundations who support Valley Haven are: The Hutton Foundation, The Wood-Claeyssens Foundation, The Yardi Foundation, the Hildergard-Balin Foundation, The Eagle Foundation. It is through the generous help of donors and charitable foundations that Valley Haven Adult Day Program continues. Thank You!!

Holiday Celebration at Valley Haven
Our BIG Holiday Party began with crafts and holiday music. Followed by a reading of "T'was the Night Before Christmas" performed with great zeal by Marsha. The program aides provided a delicious home-made Mexican luncheon on our best holiday china while sparkling cider was served in our crystal goblets. For dessert the participants were served red velvet cake and coffee. To top off the wonderful day, our participants were treated to Christmas music by violinist Diane Siminski. Diane also took the time to explain her instrument, the violin, to us all. Thank you Diane for making our Holiday Party special.

A family from Morro Bay saw our add on Craig's List and was in need of a van with a lift. They came on Friday to take a look. It was just what they were looking for. A win-win for us all. We no longer have to park a van on the street and they have transportation for their wheelchair bound loved one.

Fireworks Sale?
In light of the recent Miguelito Canyon fire, the Lompoc City Council is reconsidering allowing the sale of safe and sane fireworks within city limits. The subject is up for discussion at the city council meeting on June 3rd. IF we are allowed to sell fireworks this year as a fundraiser, our location will be the Big Brand Tire Store parking lot at 701 W Central. Please stop by and support Valley Haven.
Our Cedar Tree Has Been Removed
We knew the day would come that we would have to cut down our stately old cedar tree. That day was last Friday. In recent months the tree began dropping large limbs. Sometimes this was due to a windy day but not always. We were concerned a limb might injure someone or damage the house. We have saved a slice of the tree to be used later in our landscape design. A landscape plan is in the works. We anticipate we will begin work on the grounds in the Fall. Bear with us in the meantime as the current yard dies off.

Valley Haven to Present Our Program at the Lompoc Rotary Club
Valley Haven has been invited to make a presentation at the Lompoc Rotary Club at their meeting on May 14th. This is a great opportunity for Valley Haven to share with the community our program and what an asset it is to Lompoc Businesses. As most members of the Rotary Club are business persons they realize the importance of having a place for their loved one to go during the day while they are at work. While also knowing they are safe, having fun and are interacting with others.

A Photo Tour of the Outside of the Valley Haven House
This is the front porch to the Valley Haven House. A new concrete ramp allows our participants with wheelchairs and walkers easy access to the house from the Valley Haven bus which parks adjacent to the ramp. Included in the Valley Haven daily fee is transportation. Valley Haven will pick up participants in the morning and and drop off our participants in the afternoon.
The large covered porch welcomes our participants to enjoy the outdoors.

A Photo Tour of Inside the Valley Haven House
Many thanks to the Santa Barbara Foundation for the grant that allowed us the funds to purchase new furniture for Valley Haven. We have 3 love seats, a sofa and overstuffed chair among other items that are both attractive and comfortable for our participants to enjoy.
We opened a wall between the living room and the master bedroom to allow for a larger open space. The big screen TV has Wii which the participants use for exercise. We also have many movies to chose from that appeal to our seniors to view on occasion.
When our participants arrive in the morning they are offered a beverage and a snack. There is fresh brewed coffee or juice waiting for them. The kitchen also allows us to provide snacks and prepare lunches for our participants.
This is our activity room. Here it is set up for an open house but the tables separate allowing the participants to gather in smaller groups for meals or craft activities. We also play memory stimulating games in this room and chair exercises.

LDS Church provides "Helping Hands" to Valley Haven
The "Helping Hands" project sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints provided much help to Valley Haven. Several weeks before the scheduled "Helping Hands" day we were asked if we could use any help. The answer is almost always yes. We met with the LDS representative, Enoch Mills, and agreed the lawn needed moving and the picket fence needed some painting. A few days before the "Helping Hands" day, Enoch came to mow our rather large lot. It was quite a job given the height of the grass. And then on April 26th a crew of volunteers came to paint the picket fence. They worked until we ran out of paint. A nicer group of young people you will not meet. The LDS church also helped plant over 350 wine barrels for the "Lompoc in Bloom" organization. Thank you so much to you all!!

Womens Fund of Northern Santa Barbara County Visit Valley Haven
The Women's Fund of Northern Santa Barbara county held their monthly meeting at Valley Haven on April 9th. In addition to regular business they were at Valley Haven to see where their grant of $10,000.00 was used. Valley Haven was granted this money to refurbish the bathroom into an ADA compliant bathroom. We hope the Women's Fund was happy with the result. We certainly are and are very thankful for their contribution in making the Valley Haven House not only a beautiful but also a functional place for our seniors to enjoy.

Valley Haven Hosts Chamber of Commerce Mixer
Proud to show of the new Valley Haven House, we hosted the Lompoc Chamber of Commerce mixer on April 24th. Chamber members were given a tour of the facility and a history of Valley Haven's thirteen year history in the Lompoc Valley. Many members commented what an asset Valley Haven is to the Lompoc community. When a caregiver needs respite to enjoy a day off or run errands Valley Haven is ready to take care of their loved one. For those who are taking care of their parents, Valley Haven is a place they can feel comfortable leaving their loved one knowing they are safe and socially active at the same time. Lots of yummy snacks were enjoyed by all.

Valley Haven is subject of The Forward View in the Lompoc Record
Sally Bass wrote an article that was published in the Lompoc Record on March 9th. It follows....
Danny, Jimmy, Sally, Terry, Billy, Patsy, Tommy, Mollie, Fizzy and Grace is my mother's response if you ask her to name her children. If you ask her how she got the name Sally O'Malley, she will tell you she married Mr. O'Malley, so her name would rhyme.
My mother can still remember these facts, but she is slowly losing the ability to remember much else. We noticed the little things at first, like her forgetting to come to our house for dinner. But, in time, it became apparent she had significant memory loss.Gone were the daily crossword puzzles. Soon there were notes to remind her to feed her dog. My mother was diagnosed with dementia.
Mom wanted to live out her life in her own home. She was a widow and lived alone. We began getting people to come in to help her dress and make meals. But she was withdrawing from the once-busy social life she had. She was becoming socially isolated.
A friend mentioned Valley Haven Adult Day Program. Mom and I made a visit to see if she would be interested in attending. We found several participants being engaged in games, chair exercises, crafts and music. Mom reluctantly agreed to go for two days to see if she would like the program. The Valley Haven bus picked her up from her home, and when she arrived, she was given a snack. At lunchtime, a warm meal was prepared for her and the other participants. Also that day, a gentleman came in to sing and play the guitar for the seniors. Finally, to top things off, Mom won the bingo game. At 3 p.m. the bus took Mom back home. She was sold.On the days Mom attended Valley Haven, she dressed her best and was ready for the bus. Mom had somewhere to be where she belonged and was not judged.
My mother attended Valley Haven for three years, until it became necessary to place her in an assisted-living home. Valley Haven gave Mom an enriched life, despite the progression of her memory loss.
Valley Haven has taken a big leap forward in Lompoc by purchasing a 1920s home and converting it into the new Valley Haven House. Valley Haven is the only stand-alone adult day program in Lompoc. And as our population ages, the need for a program like this will become more and more important.

Valley Haven in the Lompoc Record
valley haven moves into new home
Program seeks donors and clients
Senior care operation opened its doors in January
February 09, 2014 1:00 am • Gianna Cruet/gcruet@lompocrecord.com
Valley Haven, an adult day
program, finally moved into its permanent home in Lompoc, but needs
further help to remain profitable and serve clients in its new location,
representatives said. Valley Haven opened Jan. 2, after six
months of remodeling and preparing its new location at 502 N. Third St.,
a former residence. The facility, which previously operated in St.
Mary’s Episcopal Church, ran into problems with funding last year when
the Lompoc Planning Commission upheld requirements to construct on-site
parking spaces and a sidewalk, which were projects the nonprofit
organization said were too expensive. But the Lompoc City Council
voted to eliminate the parking space requirement and delayed the
construction of the sidewalk in September, so the home was able to open
as scheduled, said Valley Haven Executive Director Sandra Knight.
Valley Haven, however, still needs funding to pay for a sidewalk, which must be completed in 24 months. The facility also needs to recoup remodeling costs, Knight said “We do still need to raise money for the sidewalk,” she said. “We had to put $100,000 into the house for all the things we had to do. We need to raise money to cover those costs as well.”Knight and Valley Haven President Susan Lindman said they need both donors and new clients from the community.
Currently, Valley Haven has 15 seniors enrolled in the Lompoc program, they said.Valley Haven, which has served 307 seniors in Lompoc between 2000 and 2012, charges $65 a day, Monday through Friday, for seniors to be picked up from their homes and spend six hours at the facility, Lindman said. At times, Valley Haven is able to offer scholarships to those who cannot afford the complete fee.
Lompoc is the second location for the nonprofit organization which was started in 1986 by individuals who recognized the need for an adult day program in the Santa Ynez Valley. The organization’s other facility is in Ballard. At the house, seniors arrive at 8:30 a.m. and play bingo, listen to music, watch movies, eat lunch and do crafts before Valley Haven’s vehicle take them home at 3 p.m., said Sally Bass, a board member of Valley Haven.Bass said her mother used to attend the program three days a week. She would look forward to the arrival of the buses to her home to pick her up for the day, Bass said.Because of the program, Bass said her mother was able to be independent for a few more years before she had to be placed in a nursing home.“My mom loved coming,” she said. “She’d get dressed up like she was going to church.”
Bass said her mother, who had dementia, felt isolated due to her condition. Because many other seniors at Valley Haven also have dementia, Bass’ mother felt others could relate to her condition.“Having a program like this, where she’s accepted for who she is — there’s no judgment at all,” she said. “It was wonderful.”
Seniors like Valley Haven’s property on North Third Street because it is a home and not an institution, Bass said.
“You are treated kindly and with respect,” Lindman said. “That is always felt by these people, even if they forget other things they know. They have a welcoming environment.”
Another important aspect of the senior care facility is that it provides the caregivers with a break for several hours, Lindman said.
"You have to take care of yourself first,” Knight said. “Otherwise, you’re not going to be in a position to care for anyone else. By taking (seniors) to Valley Haven, you have a moment to relax and sit down.”
Valley Haven is an important service to the public, which is why the facility needs more visibility, Lindman said.

Many Thanks, We're Open
Valley Haven is grateful to many people and organizations in the Lompoc Valley for making our dream of owning our own "home" a reality. The architect and contractor listened to our needs and worked with us to convert a 1920's home into the ADA facility state licensing requires. We added ramps, fire sprinkles, and a completely new ADA bathroom. We retrofitted the home for seismic safety, a poured a new driveway and handicap parking and added a smaller second bathroom. The interior of the home has been painted, new window coverings installed and beautiful new furniture welcomes all to sit in comfort. We hope this new "home" is a place your loved one would like to spend the day in the company of seniors. We are proud of our new Valley Haven House and would love to give you a tour.
